 Charles "Val" Clute, age 85, passed away on April 22, 2012 after a short illness. Born February 14, 1927 in Jacksonville, Illinois, Val grew up in Bellrose, New York. After serving in the Army, Val attended Alfred University in Alfred, New York where he earned his BA degree in Industrial Ceramic Design in 1951. He met his wife Nancy while at Alfred. After several years as a Container Designer at Thatcher Glass Co. in Elmira, New York, Val went back to Alfred University to serve as the Alumni Director at his alma mater for two years. Val and his family moved to California in 1973 where he became the Director of Container Design at Madera Glass Co. He retired in 1984.
Val is preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Nancy L. Clute. Val is survived by his son Doug and his wife Jennifer, their sons Andrew (Drew) and Taylor Clute; his daughter Kelly Clute Boyle, her "better half" Bobby Romero and her son Joey Boyle; his sister Palma Sutphen and brother Ronald Clute both of Long Green, Maryland; his sister in law Joni Kelly from Merced; his brother and sister in law Van and Joan Van Cleave of Nampa, Idaho. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews across the country. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 27, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, 500 West Sunset Avenue in Madera. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to either of his two favorite charities: Rotary Foundation/Polio Plus c/o Sunrise Rotary, P.O. Box 439, Madera, CA 93639 or the Madera County Arts Council, 1653 N. Schnoor Ave., Madera, CA 93637.
